The Names of God:  El Deah

Knowledge is a collection of facts, information, and skills acquired by an individual through education.  Knowledge is remembering all those facts and dates that we all learned in elementary school.  Knowledge is not, however,  just the rote memorization of facts and information.  Knowledge is also an awareness of familiarity that is gained by experience.  For example:  my son, many years ago now, learned by experience that sticking a metal fork in an outlet was not a good and enjoyable thing.  Look at what God's Word tells us in Proverbs 1:7:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Knowledge begins with the fear of God.  The fear of God does not mean to be scared or afraid of God; rather, it means to have respect for, and to stand in awe of God.  To fear God also means to live your life in submission to His Word and His will.

Let me remind you that the Hebrew word ??? (El) means God.  It implies might, strength, and power.  Anytime that El is used to refer to Yahweh (the God of Israel) it is qualified by other word(s) that further define who He is.  It has been a great joy the past few years taking the time to get a better understanding of the many names of God.  In doing so I have learned a great deal about God, His character, and His nature.

This time in Moose Nuggets I want to give you a glimpse into God's name, El Deah.  We know that El means God.  The Hebrew word ?????? (Deah) means knowledge.  God's name, El Deah means the God of knowledge.

1 Samuel 2:3

Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by Him deeds are weighted.

Romans 11:33

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!  How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!

God is omniscient.  God knows everything!  God knows every single thing that has ever happened, and He knows every single thing that will ever happen.  He knows every word that you have ever spoken, and He knows every thought that you have ever had.  Absolutely nothing catches God by surprise.

When I think about the infinite knowledge of God, I stand amazed.  I am amazed at the sheer amount of knowledge that He processes.  Mankind is still seeking to fully understand the complexity of the human body, and all that knowledge resides with the One who created us.  Mankind is still debating the origins of the universe (FYI:  I am a staunch believer in a literal Seven Day Creation, as well as a Young Earth), but the One who spoke the universe into existence is the keeper of that knowledge.

When I think about the infinite knowledge of God, I am filled with awe.   I am in awe of the moose that I occasionally see hanging out in my yard, and realizing that God knows all their movements.  I am is awe of the Northern Lights that I am blessed to see every Fall and Spring, knowing that God understands all the nuts and bolts of what makes them happen, even though I don't have a clue!  I am in awe when I remember that even though I am one of billions alive today, that God knows me, and that He longs for me to know Him.

El Deah wants you and I to tap into all the knowledge that He possesses; that is what we call Godly Wisdom.  Let me circle back to Proverbs 1:7:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Our pursuit for knowledge must begin with God, His wisdom and His instruction.  To seek anything other than Godly knowledge is folly.  To seek anything other than Godly wisdom is foolish.  My sincere prayer is that you will come to know the God of all knowledge in an intimate, personal, and saving relationship with His Only Son, Jesus Christ.

I hope that you are enjoying learning more about God by looking at some of His names.    I hope that you will continue to join with me in this journey.  I also hope that you will take the time to let me know what you think.  You can comment below, or you can email me at moosecreekbaptist@gmail.com.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Wisdom / A Name

Wisdom is from God. He wants us to diligently seek HIS Knowledge and wisdom. Names are very important also, which seems to be the whole point behind this particular section of this Blog. Would God tell us to do something if he knows it cannot be done? I may be wrong, but I don't believe he would. So then, why is it that whenever I show interest in accepting his challenge in Revelation 13:18 I get shot down and told It Can't Be Done? No one even seems to want to ponder it. Revelation 13:18 (Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.) Is this not the epitome of a Wisdom and a Name challenge??
